After all of the songs were sung on American Idol Tuesday night a record setting 34 million votes were cast! That’s still way off the pace from years past when that number would be in the mid 40 million votes range. The Top 9 kicked last night off with an Elvis medley of classics. Why is it that in a singing competition like AI, these group songs are always lip synced? Is this what we’re going to get when we drop $30 bucks per ticket to see them on tour this summer?

The first elimination took place right at the beginning of the show. Ryan asked Casey James, Aaron Kelly and Andrew Garcia to come take center stage. He goes through the judges comments from Tuesday about each one of their performances. Then proceeds to tell Casey and Aaron that they are safe for another week. I knew there was no way Arron was going home last night. But, I will never buy an Aaron Kelly project! Andrew is a great singer with a ton of personality and he will be around for a while making great pop music. Andrew sang out to the James Morrison song, “You Give Me Something” and at the end the now 8 remaining Idols take the stage to give him a hug.

Next week Alicia Keys willbe the mentor and she’ll bring some soulful slow songs for the Top 7 to sing. It’s Idol Gives Back week and we got a sneak peek at a video of Elliott Yamin and Kara Dioguardi visiting a school in Angola. I can’t wait to see what Casey or Aaron do with a slow R&B ballad from Alicia Keys.

Ryan then called the remain 6 contestants Lee, Siobhan, Katie, Mike, Crystal and Tim to the center of the stage. He asked each one of them how they were feeling about their progress each week. They all gave the safe and reassuring answer…”I’m getting more confidence and comfortable on stage.” Ryan  let’s Crystal and Siobhan know they are safe for another week. In a cruel move Ryan then asked Lee to walk toward the couch with him and even went as far as to have him sit down, before telling him he’ll be back next week.

This meant that Mike Lynch, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban were in the bottom 3.

Adam Lambert took the stage. I didn’t even know he was there until all of the smoke on stage cleared the Kodak theater. Wow, can we cut back on the fog machine just a little bit people. Adam went on to tell Ryan that American Idol prepared him for what really happens in the music business after leaving the show.

After the commercial break Ryan informs Tim Urban that he is in the Top 7 and asks him to head back to the couch.

Mike Lynche and Katie Stevens are the final two. Ryan admitted before making the big announcement that one of them wasn’t even in the bottom 3 to begin with, nice twist AI producers. You got us thinking that after such an emotional save last week of Big Mike that he could be going home anyway this week. Not to be the case, Katie Stevens was eliminated.
