cdstackThe New York Times is reporting that the Universal Music Group is going to cut CD prices from their normal prices of &15 bucks to $10 or less. They want to see if it will get you back into buying CD’s instead of digitally downloading your music. Their CD test is expected to launch in the next few months and last through the end of the year. It will include a random sample of the label’s new releases.

UMG distribution chief Jim UrieI said that CD sales had doubled at stores involved in a much more limited test of their pricing strategy…

It seems pretty obvious to us that a dedicated fan will gladly pay for extra content, for deluxe versions. But, the casual fan isn’t willing to pay $15 dollars for a regular CD.

Hastings Entertainment CEO John Marmaduke preictes that the lower prices should increase sales volume by 30% or more…

I think that $10 and below is the magic price. Lower prices are something that consumers and retailers have been asking for years.

Deluxe versions of albums, which have extras songs or features, will continue to sell at their current price. We just want to know if you’re in the market for buying CD’s at even this lower price point. Let us know in the comment box below if why you are or are not going to buy them.

$10 has always been the sweet spot for me. I would much rather have a physical CD and if I can find what I want for $10 or less I’ll buy it. If I can’t find what I want at that price I’ll buy it online. This is great news.

I never stopped buying them. I like the tangible liner and packaging, something that’s a piece of the art (music) that I fell In love with 10 or so years ago when I was nine…ten, something like that. It helps convey the concepts and feel of an album even if it isn’t a concept album. I’ll buy them as long as they’re available!
