americanidolperformance320Last night the Top 8 guys took over the American Idol Season 9 stage. I was hoping that they’d at least sing more up tempo songs then the girls did on Tuesday night. No need to keep you waiting here’s what went down…

Lee Dewyze sang “Fireflies” by Owl City. This is a pop song and not the rock version he tried to turn it into. It didn’t work for me. Randy loved what he did by making it his own. Ellen liked the rock version that he brought to the stage. Kara thought his version was better than the original. Simon didn’t find anything to rave about to him on his version.

Alex Lambert sang “Trouble” by Ray Lamontagne. I really like his voice and have no doubt he will end up with a record deal by the end of this season. But, he has to work on his stage presence. Randy wasn’t wowed by his take on this song. Ellen told him he is growing week after week. Kara told him to loosen up and become vulnerable. Simon told him to imagine Randy in a bikini to lighten up a little bit.

Tim Urban sang “Hallelujah” by Tim Buckley. He did a great job! He was in the moment and words of the song. Dark horse to win it all? Randy thought he did a pretty good job. Ellen thought he did such a great job that she got out of her chair to give him a hug. Kara Simon took credit for his great performance and told him it was his best performance by far.

Andrew Garcia sang “Genie In A Bottle” by Christina Aguilera. Ryan asked Andrew if he was nervous and he said no, but I was very nervous for him. He did such a great job with Paula Abdul’s song during audition week. To take on this song was a risk. but it’s going to pay off because he knocked it out of the park. Randy didn’t like it because he didn’t have any range with it. Ellen felt like he kept a little back. Kara felt like he was fighting with his guitar. Simon felt like he took a step back by singing this song.

Casey James sang “You’ll Think of Me” by Keith Urban. He has found his musical sweet spot and did a great job. You’ll be seeing him opening up next summer for one of today’s top country acts. Randy felt like it was a safe song for him. Ellen liked it and loved seeing him behind the guitar. Kara is slowly coming back to the Casey train after his performance. Simon thought he sounded great.

Aaron Kelly is out of his league now. He did alright, but there is no way he is coming back next week. Randy thought he did alright, but has work to do on his vocals. Ellen told him he sounded great, but the song was to much for him at such a young age. Kara felt like he couldn’t relate to the story of the lyrics. Simon defended his version of the song and told Kara she was wrong.

Todrick Hall
sang “Somebody to Love” by Queen. Again, why is an R&B singer trying to sing a rock track. I just don’t get it! Don’t get me wrong he did a great job with his version, but when you hear the name Queen Ed Mercury’s voice instantly pops into your head. He added rhythm and runs that just didn’t work for me. Randy was on the opposite side of the musical fence from me and claimed him to be back in the game. Ellen couldn’t believe he was singing this song and felt like he made it into a great gospel song. Kara liked his voice around the song, but didn’t love his style around it. Simon told him he finally told America what kind of singer he is going to become.

Mike Lynche sang“Women’s Work” by Maxwelll (Kate Bush). He brings a ton of emotion to the stage with him every wek. He did that once again this week and his set opened up with just him singing into the mic. It was off the chain! Randy thought it was dope and is calling Maxwell to let him know that Mike did him justice. Ellen thought it was a great performance. Kara cried during his performance becasue she knew what he has gone through in the last few weeks with the birth of his first child. Simon thought it was the best “live” show performance of the year.

Let us know in the comment box below what two guys you think will be going home tonight.
