Last night the Top 8 Girls from American Idol Season 9 took the stage to fight for a spot in the Top 12! This means whichever girls make it past this week will be going on the American Idol tour this summer. In other words this is a BIG payday week for these unsigned artists.
Here are some of the highlights…
Katie Stevens sang “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson. I don’t know if she was the right girl to kick of the night. She once again didn’t have any connection to the lyrics. Randy didn’t like it at all. Ellen agreed with me in that she didn’t connect with the lyrics. Kara and Simon liked that she took their advice and went younger, but thought the song was to big for her.
Siobhan Magnus sang “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals. Every week when I see her on stage it reminds me of Sandra Bernhart. Then she starts to sing and I quickly realize that there is no way Sandra could sing like her. Randy liked her and wants to hear her sing more songs like this one. Ellen thought she was spectacular. Kara loved her acapella intro and liked her performance. Simon didn’t like it at all.
Lacey Brown sang “The Story” by Brandy Carlisle. She has such great control of her voice. This girl could end up giving Lilly and Crystal a run for the top girl spot. Randy thought it was a little sleepy, but found it to be very cool. Ellen thought it was the perfect song for her voice. Kara thought it was a brilliant song choice and could make a record like that right now. Simon liked it, but hasn’t heard the right song connection for her yet.
Katelyn Epperly sang “I Feel the Earth Move” by Carole King. Loved seeing her bust out the keyboard, but this is a song that requires you to move around the stage. I think she could have left it back stage. Randy didn’t feel her vibe in the song. Ellen didn’t think this was the best song choice for her. Kara didn’t feel like she was competing by singing this song. Simon liked her hair, but it felt like a request night at a nice resturaunt.
Didi Benami sang “Rianna” by Fleetwood Mac. She has finally become comfortable under the spotlight. What was the deal with all of the slow sappy songs? Randy liked it better than last week, but again not blown away. Ellen liked that she did a great job considering the train wreck she had last week. Kara found it to be one of her favorite moments of the night. Simon thought she proved herself as an artist.
Paige Miles sang “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin. Seriously, please stop with all the ballads! Note to AI producers if you want to keep your ratings please give them up tempo songs to sing next week. I wasn’t feeling that song at all. Randy felt like it didn’t work and fell flat. Ellen didn’t think it was the right song for her. Kara asked her if she felt like it was wrong…”No it’s a personal song to me.” Simon let her know she has a great voice, but this performance could be the end of the line for her.
Crystal Bowersox sang “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman. I’m lovin’ the this girls behind an electric guitar! I’m now convinced that no matter where this girl ends up on this years show, you’ll be picking up her new project next year. She is just a born artist. Randy loved it, loved her and is exactly why he loves this show. Ellen told her it was the best performance of the night for her. Kara liked it and feels like this performance is starting to seperate her from the pack. Simon has no doubt she’ll be in the Top 12 next week with that performance.
Lilly Scott sang “I Fall to Pieces” by Patsy Cline. The girl can sing, but it still feels like she is performing at a local coffee shop and not for Americas votes. She tends to not look at the camera and instead just performs to the person in the front row. Randy loved the performance. Ellen likes her style. Kara and Simon thought she did a great job.
That’s it for the Top 8 Girls. Let us know in the comment box below which girls you think will be going home tomorrow night. Don’t forget tonight, the Top 8 guys will take the AI stage at 9p/8p (CT).
