owlcityoceaneyescdOwl City is an amazing underground musical project that you may be unaware of and I want you to get to know more about them. Owl City consists of Adam Young and his backing band. They started making music in Adam’s parents’ basement. Their name comes from Adam’s hometown of Owatonna, Minnesota. This week Owl City reclaimed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart after originally hitting the #1 position two weeks ago with the smash hit “Fireflies” from their debut project “Ocean Eyes”

Relient K frontman Matt Thiessen has been well aware of Owl City and has even worked with them on several songs. In fact, Adam produced Relient K’s song “Terminals” from their “Forget And not Slow Down” project. Matt recently stated that it is very likely that he and Adam will produce another new side project called “Goodbye Dubai” in the future.

A self-described ‘shy-kid’ Adam’s influences are disco and European electronic music. 1980s synthpop, J-pop and new wave music is also heard in Owl City’s overall sound. After two independent unsigned albums, and increasing popularity through Owl City’s MySpace profile (which has received more than 6 million plays on tracks, such as “Hello Seattle”) these guys are going to be around for a while.

In 2007, Owl City released an EP titled Of June and in 2008, the album Maybe I’m Dreaming was released. Of June reached #20 on the Billboard Electronic Albums chart, and Maybe I’m Dreaming peaked on the same chart at #16.[5]

This year Owl City released their third project “Ocean Eyes” digitally on July 14th with the physical release on July 28th. The project debuted at #27 on the Billboard 200. After two weeks the project had received over 2,600 ratings on iTunes with an average score of five stars.

Adam is joined by Breanne Duren (background vocals/keyboards), Matthew Decker (drums), Laura Musten (violin), and Hannah Schroeder (cello). That’s right the violin and cello are making a big comeback, but it’s interesting to know that they’re not using any guitars in their music.

Owl City’s magical mix of lively-digital rhythms and lush melodies first hatched in the basement of his parent’s house is perfectly portrayed in their debut video for “Fireflies,” which depicts the affable singer performing the song in a dreamy basement environment. The video is closing in on an incredible 13million views on YouTube, and surging in X-LARGE rotation on VH-1, and other video and digital platforms. While Universal has locked down their official video from sharing I found another version of this amazing song for you to check out now. Let us read your review of it in the comment box below this video.
