On Thanksgiving Day I was excited to learn that my cousin Rayn has become a YouTube sensation around the world. Last year Ryan and his youth group at My Father’s House in Vacaville, CA put together a Christian rap music video called “Gimme Dat Christian Side Hug”. Ryan came up with the lyrics and chorus to this song while at dinner with a married couple from the Church. When he arrived and started greeting them he found himself in a situation where the wife was holding a bowl of salad. Well, since he couldn’t give her a traditional front hug he said…”Gimme Dat Christian Side Hug.” It was in that moment that the light went off in Ryan’s head and he began writing the rap lyrics to this now world famous YouTube video.
Don’t believe me then check out this quote about the song from oneindia.com a newspaper in India…
A song by a band of rappers, who have been advocating celibacy, has become a hit on You Tube for advocating Christian side-hugs’ because frontal hugs are sinful.‘Gimme Dat Christian Side Hug’ is a song by a band of rappers apparently linked to a Californian ministry called The Father’s House
Look what the The Huffington Post had to say…
Clearly, these are gangsters on the run from the law – probably from side-hugging up a storm! One emcee (wearing his bandanna 2pac-style no less) admits to taking part in the forbidden front-hug. But don’t worry, God. He’s married.
The one thing that these and all the other reports can’t decide is if Ryan and his boyz are being real or are they making fun of Christians. I know the real answer and in a few days will post my interview with Ryan that will share the whole story behind this song. Until then watch the video now and let me know what you think of this song in the comment box below the video..

Quite possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.
You realize that this video is the joke of the internet, right? You know, we’re laughing AT IT. One wonders how strong your faith is if you’re at risk for serious arousal over a G-D hug.
Hey I like it
Sick! I don’t let my daughter watch regular rap and this is just as bad. The one guy kept reaching for his crotch. Definitely NOT Christian.
“I don’t let my daughter watch regular rap”
A shame, it’s a passionate way of expressing yourself and who you are. Some of the people in the industry for sure are not exactly the greatest of role models. The same can be said for every genre of music. Not that it seems you’re doing this, but let’s not throw out the baby with the bath water.
“The one guy kept reaching for his crotch.”
Were we watching the same video? I think you’re mistaking the hip-hop style of pointing and dropping ones hand in front of them as the legendary Michael Jackson crotch grab.
“Definitely NOT Christian.”
Pretty bold statement. Why?
The video is meant as a semi-serious joke. It’s meant to be fun and something to make people lighten up, laugh, and actually think about their actions when it comes to interactions with the opposite sex. It’s not purposing the “Side Hug” as the solution but being silly and catchy enough to grab people’s (namely youth’s) attention.
I laughed. Kudos to those who performed.
Lol this video is goofy! It’s just a good way to make people laugh
I actually found the whole thing a bit of a laugh, until I watched it a few more times, and found it rather scary.
Promoting celebacy is one thing, but to make one think that normal human contact is some how sinful only furthers the repression which will only lead to more devious behavior in the future.
It portrays women as the instigators of this sinful “full frontal hug”, which is utter non-sense, and then out of no where the song gets political.
The term rough rider refers to sodomy with out lubrication, part of the reason DMX stopped using the term for his group, much like R.Kelly stopped using down low as it refers to homosexual intercourse while not telling anyone.
The gunshots in the background is more than confusing, and lastly, the degrading bit about putting a girl in a coma for a full frontal hug, that really seems to miss JC’s message.
All in all, it’s a funny video that no one is taking seriously. Your cousin should do the honorable thing and write a descent article about why he chose the degrading lyrics, the non-sense politically motivated lyrics and how he will defend himself when lucasfilms comes after him for using starwars music.
I can’t wait to see the interview.
Cheers,
Chad
