coldplaywillpic01Over the last six months or so we’ve been following the copyright lawsuits filed against Coldplay. They’ve been accused of stealing music created by guitarist Joe Satriani who claims that Coldplay’s major hit “Viva La Vida” bears too close a resemblance to his 2004 instrumental “If I Could Fly.” Then, ’70s soft rocker Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) said “Viva” also resembles his 1973 song, “Foreigner Suite.” Well, according to Rollingstone.com Cat, has forgiven Chris Martin and company, acknowledging that any similarities between the two songs wasn’t intentional. Cat went on to say…

I stand by what I said. They did copy my song but I don’t think they did it on purpose.

Cat even went as far as to admitting sometimes he even unknowingly rips off his own songs…

I have even copied myself without even knowing I have done it. I’ll write down what I think is a good melody and realize it’s the same as something I have already done. I don’t want them to think I am angry with them. I’d love to sit down and have a cup of tea with them and let them know it’s okay.

I’m no lawyer, but could Yusuf sue Cat for stealing his songs? Better yet could Coldplay sue both Yusuf and Cat for defimation of character?
