Katy Perry may not be a name you know, but if you have a radio and have listened to mainstream radio for even 20 minutes the last few weeks then you’ve definitely heard her current hit single “I Kissed A Girl” on the radio. In fact, according to R&R magazine this song is the third most popular song in the country after only 9 weeks of airplay. What you and even I was surprised to learn thanks to PluggedIn Online is that Katy Perry is actually former Christian singer Katy Hudson.

I’m just sharing with you Katy’s musical facts and life growing up in a Christian home. Then hopefully by the end of this post we’ll all be better informed on who the real Katy is…

Katy grew up in Santa Barbara, Calif., the middle child of two traveling-minister parents who planted churches and held evangelist meetings across the country. Their faith made music a highly polarized issue in the Hudson household. In fact the name “Perry” is her Mom’s maiden name.

Katy credits Queen & Alanis Morissette as significant musical influences once the secular-music flood gates were thrown open. Somewhere along the way, full-on rebellion also crept in. By the time Katy talked to Blender magazine in October 2004, any pretense of trying to live a life commited to Christ had evaporated.

Interestingly, she expressed a better sense of how she might influence others when she was 17 when she told Go! magazine…

I know sometimes if I don’t think about what I do or think about the things I say, then I’ll just ruin it for everybody and keep giving that stereotype of teens—that they’re irresponsible and not doing anything with their lives.

Only time will tell which Katy is the real deal, which one will outlast and outplay the other. But, I think all of us at one time or another were rebels in our lives like Katy may be today. That doesn’t mean God loved you or Katy less, in fact I think He loves us more when were gone. If a relationship is broken the person (God in this case) left behind is hurting the most. The person who’s just walked out feels no pain or at least pretends to not feel any anyway.

Instead of joining the judgment train lets start praying for Katy to stay safe during her travels on the current Warped Tour, make good choices in the light of her current success, pray for her family who need extra for strength in light of her mainstream success and then lets just see how God moves in her life iin the coming months and years.
