Your new American Idol is David Cook. It must have been true what MSNBC reported yesterday, but 12 million votes between 1st & 2nd place is a pretty big margin. Congratulations to both of them on a great final. Here’s the official announcement from Ryan…

Let’s break down the night for those of you who may have missed it.

Ryan said that 97.5 million votes came in last night which is the biggest vote total ever. He went on to say that David Cook received 56% of the vote with Archie receiving the other 44%. The first group performance of the night from the Top 12 was “Get Ready” and they were joined by the, “So You Think You Can Dance” TV stars.

David Cook and David Archuleta sing “Hero” from Chad Kroeger of Nickleback. The song was featured on the soundtrack to “Spider-Man” and became a cross-genre hit in the summer of 2002. Then Syesha Mercado performed “Waiting For You” from Seal who joined her on stage. Ford then gave Archuleta and Cook their 2008 Hybrids.

The six top females of the season sang a Donna Summer medley. Halfway through, Donna Summer herself comes on stage to perform the new single. That’s followed up by Carly Smithson and Michael Johns singing “The Letter”. Jimmy Kimmel came out and said:

After 19 weeks of karaoke singing, here we are at the finals.

The Top 6 guys came out and performed “Summer of ’69″ by Bryan Adams, who joined them on stage. David Cook then performed “Sharp-Dressed Man” with ZZ Top which was awesome. Then, Graham Nash (from Crosby, Stills and Nash) sang “Teach Your Children” with Brooke White.

Then we watched a commercial where David Cook was singing the cover from the movie “Risky Business” for the new Guitar Hero game. You know, the movie that made Tom Cruise famous by sliding across the floor with his sunglasses on. The Jonas Brothers performed after the commercial set which was quickly followed up by a video segment of the worst auditions from this season.

One Republic came out and performed their HUGE hit “Apologize.” David Archuleta came in on the second verse and sang the rest of the song with lead singer Ryan Tedder. It was actually really good and if Archie can find songs like this to sing then he will have a great Pop career. Jordin Sparks came out next to perform her song “One Step At A Time”. Carrie Underwood rocked the joint by singing “Last Name”.

It’s coming down to the wire here, everyone. Oh, no they didn’t! They let Archie also sing the Risky Business Guitar Hero commercial. The top 12 sang “Faith” by George Michael as their last song of the season, which brought out the man himself, George Michael. I was very impressed with all the guest artists they had booked for this year’s final show. It was a non-stop party and even the few group songs the Top 12 did were not that bad.

Then it came time to read the results, but not before Simon gave an apology to David Cook and said he was really disrespectful to him on Tuesday night. Ryan finally announces David Cook as the winner of this year’s American Idol.
