Chris Daughtry came into America’s view because of his stunning fourth-place finish during the fifth season of American Idol in 2006. He took that experience and rolled it into Daughtry, the
debut album which, after just 5 weeks, became the fastest selling debut rock album in Soundscan history. In fact, the single “Feels Like Tonight” is climbing the mainstream radio charts as I type this entry.
Long before Daughtry took the Idol stage he was working on his craft. At the age of 16, he began performing with rock bands in high school. In fact, Daughtry was the lead vocalist and played rhythm guitar for his high school band Cadence. He also worked with several other songwriters, such as Live’s Ed Kowalczyk, Fuel’s Carl Bell, 3 Doors Down’s Brad Arnold, Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas before forming his own band Absent Element in 2005.
Absent Element opened up for a weekly worship series called Sundays@7 at Cathedral of His Glory church in Greensboro, NC. Every week they’d feature a different artist (Jeremy Camp, Hawk Nelson, Day of Fire, etc.) during these free concerts. Incidentally, that was where Chris met Day of Fire and Josh Brown, a friendship that is still maintained to this day.
After Idol In June of 2006, Daughtry and his new found band members (who he didn’t have much of a hand picking) went into the studio to record their self-titled project. Chris’s record label chose the band mates for Daughtry which includes Josh Steely as lead guitarist, Brian Craddock rhythm guitar, Josh (JP) Paul on bass, and Joey Barneson drums. The band began a sold out tour with Bon Jovi in February which runs through the end of this month. Chris has recently joined Bon Jovi on stage to share lead vocals with Jon while they perform “Blaze of Glory”. They also stopped back by the American Idol during Idol Gives Back.
Every week we highlight fellow believers like Daughtry, who are having success playing their music in mainstream media. Our goal behind this is to encourage them, inform you of who they are and then see how together we can introduce more people to Christ.
