Sorry ladies, he’s officially off the market

February 29, 2008 · Filed Under Artist News · Comment

tenthavenorth.jpgMike Donehey from Tenth Avenue North is getting hitched! While he sounds a bit scared, he’s also sounding like he knows that this will be the best thing to happen to him. Congratulations, Mike!

From his blog…

And now, by the grace of God,
I’m going to love one woman for the rest of my life.
For the rest of my human experience, until death do us part,
I will love her, as I have been loved.
“as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.”
That is what I intend to do anyway,
what I hope to do.
To love her as Christ has loved me.
Overwhelmingly,
Sacrificially,
Purely.

And man is that scary.

Recap American Idol Top 20: Now there are 16

February 29, 2008 · Filed Under Hollywood, Music · Comment

I’m so glad Ryan showed the pictures of what I was talking about yesterday. Simon really did almost have moose ears. The funny part is, he didn’t even realize he was doing it until he saw the pictures. Oh and another thing… can we all just agree to skip the cheezy group song every week and just get to the results?imagesthumbnail1thumbnail1thumbnail1.jpg

Since the guys performed first, let’s start with them. When Ryan called up Jason Yeager, Danny Noriega, Chikezie, Jason Castro and Michal Johns, I was sure Chikezie would be gone. This guy must have a contact inside AT&T calling in votes for him because I just don’t get it. Then it was time for Robbie Carrico (former boy band member turned rock star) to start packing his bags.

Next up the girls; and that’s where the show got really weird. I was completely shocked when Ryan called out Alexandrea Lushington’s name, even though I’m a fan of Amanda (Rock chick nurse), because she should have been eliminated. The kicker was watching Carly Smithson, Alaina, Ramiele, Syesha and Kady stand up. I was sure when it was up to Kady (the Britney impersonator) and Alaina that Kady would be going home. Then he told us that Alaina Whitaker was going home. I feel like America got these two girl eliminations completely wrong.

We also found out that Idol Gives Back will be back again this year. This is a charity that raises funds to help children and young people in extreme poverty here in the U.S. and Africa. This was a HUGE success last year and I can’t wait to see who the guest performances will be on April 24th and 25th.

Next week the Top 8 guys will perform on Tuesday night, then the Top 8 girls on Wednesday, before another 4 go home on Thursday.

America: Please, watch the singing and stop sending in sympathy votes for those that should have gone home last night. Well, see you next week.

Video Thursday: Anberlin - Unwinding Cable Car

I liked this song a lot the first time I heard it. It’s also one of my wife’s new favorites.

Besides, any song that can get away with using the word “correlation” gets my vote as a good one..

Tenth Avenue North checks in

We just got this from Mike Donehey (lead singer) of Tenth Avenue North. Today they’re at the National Leadership Conference with Campus Crusade for Christ in Hilton Head, NC.

Hopefully his words will help you see today a little differently then you did when you first woke up this morning. Oh and they have a new song called “By Your Side” (it’s our myspace profile song) and enjoy the video as well.

stereotruth-myspace.jpgNot a music blog this time. Just a little note about the state of Stereotruth. It’s been not even 2 months since we started this blog, and we’ve racked up what we feel are some pretty impressive numbers.

We’ve also come across ministries that touch not only the countless lives of others, but ours as well. There are so many people doing good things out there, just to mention To Write Love on Her Arms and 7th Day @ Harvest as a couple of them.

We’ve been blessed with over 720 MySpace friends, and talked to countless people that love music just like us.

I speak for both Rodney and myself when I say… Thank you. We’re having so much fun with this and it’s the fantastic readers that make it fun.

Recap American Idol’s Top 10 girls

February 28, 2008 · Filed Under Hollywood, Music · Comment

The top 10 girls from American Idol took on songs from the 70’s last night. Right out of the gate the first 3 girls were really good. Simon was so impressed with Brookimagesthumbnail1thumbnail1.jpge White’s rendition of “You’re So Vain” that he actually thought she was singing it to him. By the way, has anyone else noticed that every time Simon critiques a performance he puts his right thumb on his temple? My daughters noticed this and said if he added his left thumb he would have moose ears as if to say “naner, naner, naner” you’re not a good singer.

In fact Carly Smithson, Syesha Mercado & Brooke White were so on the money that all of these girls will be top 10 finalists this year. This means they’ll be coming to a city near you this summer when the American Idol tour hits the road.

The ones in danger of going home tomorrow night are Alaina Whitaker, who sang a cheesy version of “Hopelessly Devoted to You” from Grease and Kady Malloy (she’s the one who’s better at impersonating Britney Spears than singing), who once again struggled. She attempted to sing “Magic Man” by Heart and maybe she couldn’t hear the band or something because she didn’t hit a single note.

Tomorrow night we find out who America sends home as the field gets cut from 20 to the sweet 16 (oops, I’m thinking of the NCAA March Madness Basketball tournament), I mean the Top 16, American Idol finalists. Come back Friday morning for a complete recap.

Larry Norman passes away

February 27, 2008 · Filed Under Artist News · Comment

The man that most proclaim as the “Father of popular Christian Music”, Larry Norman, passed away on Sunday. Larry was a pioneer in the creation of Christian music that directly competed with mainstream offerings back in the 1970’s. Larry was, in many ways, totally responsible for the music that you hear today by Christian artists, on Christian radio. He broke through barriers that many in Gospel music didn’t want broken down in the first place. If you like bands like Sanctus Real, Switchfoot, Thousand Foot Crutch, MercyMe, or any other artist that we cover, you owe Larry a debt of gratitude.

From his brother, Charles:

Our friend and my wonderful brother Larry passed away at 2:45 Sunday morning. My wife Kristin and I were with him, holding his hands and sitting in bed with him when his heart finally slowed to a stop. We spent this past week laughing, singing, and praying with him, and all the while he had us taking notes on new song ideas and instructions on how to continue his ministry and art.

Several of his friends got to come and visit with him in the last couple of weeks and were a great source of help and friendship to Larry. Ray Sievers, Derek Robertson, Mike Makinster, Jerry Albertini, Charles Thompson, Tim and Christine Gilman, Matt and Becki Simmons, Kerry Hopkins, and a few more. Thank you, guys. Larry appreciated your visits very much. And he greatly appreciated the thoughts, wishes, support and prayers that came from all of you Solid Rock friends on a daily basis. Thank you for being part of his small circle of friends over the years. Saturday afternoon he knew he was going to go home to God very soon and he dictated the following message to you while his friend Allen Fleming typed these words into Larry’s computer:
